Review on Zoom PCH-5 Protective Case For H5 Portable Recorder: Water & Dust Resistant | Velcro Belt Loop, Boom Pole Sleeve, Key Ring | Black by Krystal Simmons

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Good Concept -- Bad Execution: Protects the recorder too well by blocking access to buttons and ports

This case is a classic example of a good concept badly executed - it is a decent case made of quality material but protects the recorder too well making it almost impossible to actually use the recorder which, at least in my opinion, defeats the purpose of the purchase. Between the plastic screen that completely covers the front buttons and the fabric tightly wrapped around the sides and bottom, contrary to what Zoom claims, it's incredibly difficult if not impossible to use the voice recorder in a bag, especially if, like me, You don't use the built-in microphone, you need access to the XLR connectors. Of course you can undo the Velcro, but that gets very clunky and still doesn't offer full or easy access, and pushing the buttons through the weatherproof plastic screen is all but impossible. This case is great if you're looking for something portable and protective to carry your Zoom H5, but as a radio reporter I bought it to wear on my belt and have easy access to during press conferences and interviews - for that purpose unfortunately this case entirely missed the target. I ended up returning it and bought another instead, the Arco Portable Pouch for Zoom H5 Handy Recorder (although not from Revain as it was a lot cheaper at B&H) which although more expensive suits my needs better and is a good value- Shows the value for money between the Zoom case and the Porta Brace case.

Pros
  • Same as everything before
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
