This is a very powerful filter that I have for a 75 gallon aquarium with 10 large goldfish (>6'). For this aquarium, this is an effective mechanical filter: the water remains clean from dirt. It creates a strong current that can be too strong for small fish. powerful current it produces. It's not quiet: it produces an audible "hum" that can be annoying if your aquarium is in the living room. However, it is not very loud either, for example much quieter than all AquaClear filters, which clog quickly and are unbearably loud. Has been working for a month now with no problems. It's pretty easy to clean. All in all, this is an efficient and powerful mechanical filter that's fine if you can stomach the little "hum" it produces. I would give four or five stars if it was quiet and if it had a sprinkler. As for the internal filters, I haven't found a better alternative to this filter: the Fluval U4's internal filters are great and quiet, but they're not as powerful (about half the flow).
