Review on Crosscut Shredder - Royal Desktop by Rob Rogers

Revainrating 2 out of 5

I love the look but the shape doesn't help if it doesn't work.

I needed to replace the Staples MailMate which was a great little workhorse. I wanted the same desktop size and I really liked the look of it. It is smooth and looks very nice when the lid is closed. But I was very disappointed to find that the feed slot is even smaller than MailMate's. With MailMate I had to fold letter sized sheets in half but that was fine as most of the bills etc were folded anyway. But this Royal model is barely wide enough for an envelope and not wide enough for many of the bills and envelopes I have to shred. With MailMate I could still send junk mail in the envelope and it would eat through it. no problem. But with this royal, I often had to take out the contents and refold the paper lengthwise to make it fit. too much trouble The basket is small, which didn't seem to be a problem. But it fills up VERY quickly. In addition, the parts stack directly under the blades instead of falling to keep the contents level. So you often have to lift the lid to even out the trash in the bin, and you might as well empty it when it's all sorted out. I emptied it so many times it became annoying. But the last straw for me was that it often stuck, even at the recommended 4 sheets. And there's no auto-reverse, so I had to toggle reverse and back every time. In just a day or two it started happening very often. So looks awesome, and if you just sand a few things every now and then you might be fine. But with a slot narrower than many envelopes, and all the necessary manual folding, a tiny trash can, etc - I can't recommend this shredder.
