Ana Canción is 15 years old and grew up in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s when her parents married her to Juan Ruiz, who was twice her age. Ana's mother is a typical matriarch who wants the best for her daughter. She wants her daughter to go to New York, become the perfect wife, and bring her family to New York. Ana doesn't want to let her mother down. Ana travels to New York and discovers that her new husband only married her for the country. Juan abuses Ana verbally, emotionally, and physically. When Juan has to return to the Dominican Republic due to political unrest, Ana worries again that her apartment will be hers alone. Juan's brother Caesar has to take care of Ana. Ana and Caesar quickly become friends. He takes her place, comes up with plans to make money and treats Anya with respect. I loved the Dominican Republic! Dominican Republic is written without unnecessary punctuation marks, a sort of stream of consciousness. I liked it, I liked the flow. It was so easy to be inside Ana's head, hearing her thoughts and hearing other people's conversations. I could easily believe that this book is a memory.
