Review on πŸ”’ Enhance Your Home Security with Skylink SC-1000 Complete Wireless Alarm System by Richard Cunningham

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good alarm but a few complaints and annoyances

I recently ordered an SC-1000 alarm kit along with an SC-10 kit and an additional door sensor. Revan is excellent as always. I ordered it for next day delivery and actually received it the next day. The SC-1000 comes with a keypad, a separate AD-433 dialer, a motion sensor, two door sensors and a key fob transmitter. Not sure why it only comes with one transmitter, I think most people need at least two. I needed two transmitters and 5 door sensors, so I ordered the SC-10 because it comes with two sensors and two door transmitters and an AA-433 external siren. So some savings. Apparently SC-10 can be used as an autonomous alarm. Why come with two transmitters when the much more complete SC-1000 package only comes with one? Strange. Installation of all components was easy, took about three hours including programming. I did all the programming at my kitchen table before installing everything. So much easier. As another reviewer pointed out, you MUST clear all sensors from the AD-433 Autodialer and AA-433 Siren before you can program them onto the keypad. I'm glad she mentioned that because it's not too clear in the instructions. Also, the SC-10 manual does not say anything about programming it for use as an external siren only with the SC-1000. I had to go online to the Skylink website and download the instructions for the AA-433 siren - there was information there. That was the only problem I had while programming. Door sensors work very well. However, they are big, clunky, archaic and downright ugly. They use an old style wired door magnet and a separate transmitter with a short wire going to the magnet (you can see them in the pictures I uploaded). In my opinion they could make them MUCH smaller, more streamlined and much better looking. They stick out like a sore thumb. The motion sensor is very sensitive. However, once it triggers, it won't trigger again for thirty seconds. Why is this? It is strange. It has jumpers for high and low sensitivity, but I haven't tried low sensitivity, so I can't comment on that. I know my 50 lb dog will trip at height. But it's in my room which I keep closed when I leave, so it's not a problem for me. I would imagine that with low sensitivity and a directional sensor the dog wouldn't trip over it. But I do not know for sure. Transmitters could be smaller and have clearly labeled buttons. The only markings are a series of raised dots on the buttons, which are worthless to me. The panic button is red, but the other three are the same color. I marked the arm and disarm buttons with red and blue markers to distinguish them. It would be nice, as another reviewer pointed out, if the alarm would tell you if the door is open when you try to activate it. It would also be nice if the external siren would emit an acoustic signal when armed. It beeps when you disarm it, so why didn't they program it to beep when you arm it? In addition, you will receive a beep when arming or disarming. Why didn't they program it to beep twice when disarming? The automatic dialer works very well. But it would be nice if it could switch to "listening mode" when you answer a call so you can hear what's going on around the house, just like the Macally Air Alarm. But with all my complaints above, I'm very happy with the system as a whole. It seems to work well, the programming wasn't too difficult and it gave me some confidence when I leave the house. The Macally Air alarm I bought earlier didn't work at all so obviously this one is much better. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, because despite its shortcomings, it has more features for the price than other alarms I've reviewed. Would I buy it again? Yes, for the same reasons.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
