I bought replacement carbon filters for the Cuisinart coffee maker. Coffee maker reviews raved about how filters make the difference and help you start with good water to get a great taste. We've had a Braun non-filter coffee maker for decades and we have hard water and now with the filter I don't really notice a noticeable difference in taste so I'm not really excited, but they're not very expensive and certainly won't hurt. The charcoal should remove odors, some contaminants, etc., but I don't know the effectiveness of those little filters. I suspect if the filters that came with the coffee maker are empty you can just take them out (don't leave them there forever, they can end up seeping charcoal dust into the coffee which will be annoying or possibly moldy). and drive it without filter cartridges, but they probably help a little and do no harm and are not expensive. They make a clearer difference when you have water with odors (sulphur, etc.) than mine. In the meantime, I've bought spares for a year to ensure Revain's free shipping, which keeps costs down even further.
