Tumble dry - won't wash out.
So I bought it for a picnic at Ren Faire last year - it held up well, was a decent umbrella for light rain and the overwhelming smell faded with a bit of rain and shine. It has since been boxed and needed cleaning for this year's Ren Faire so tossed it into a Dryel dryer bag along with some other wool towels and with no wastage or other issues. If you care for it properly and avoid washing it fully at all costs (consider spot cleaning or rain washing at best), you should be fine.
