Review on ๐ŸŽฎ PDP PL-8560B Rock Candy Gesture Controller for Nintendo Wii/Wii U, Blueberry Boom by Stephen Thomas

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This is why I love Rock Candy: Even their worst controller is still pretty damn good.

When I saw Rock Candy released the Wii Remote I bought it straight away. Rock Candy have always made great controllers for the 360, PS3 and Xbox One and I expected the same quality from this one. The odd button layout (compared to standard Wiimotes) bothered me a bit, but I wanted to give it a try anyway. Finally, Rock Candy also messed up the layout of their PS3 controller and I now prefer it to the official controllers. I received the Wiimote in the mail, eagerly opened it and was initially impressed. The synchronization is very easy and the motion controls work as they should. The remote feels very comfortable in motion control situations (certainly better than the bulky Nyko remote), and the A and B buttons are pleasantly clicky and pleasant to press. And yes, nunchucks work great with this controller. So far, so good. However, when I tried to play 2D games with the remote held to the side, I encountered problems. The D-Pad certainly feels solid enough - much like a sturdier GameCube pad - and all the buttons are excellent quality, but the slope of buttons 1 and 2, combined with their tiny size, just feels awkward. Do not get me wrong; It's still quite usable (and I was able to pull off the same tricks I normally do with no problem), but the awkward angle hurts my wrist after a while. I understand they're trying to copy the NES Max and Dogbone controllers, but I also never liked them for the same reason. (Also, the tiny buttons strike me as odd, but that's also a problem with official Wii Remotes, so I guess I can slide them - although I like the Nyko Remote precisely because of its much larger buttons.) Also, the Plus- and minus buttons are roughly in the middle of the controller (to keep the NES feel), but instead they're next to the D-Pad. Rock Candy was at least clever enough to make it harder to accidentally press those two buttons (in case your thumb slips off the d-pad), but it also makes intentional presses harder, which can be a problem during fast-paced play. . All in all, it's not the worst Wii Remote to play sideways, but in this case I really wish Rock Candy stayed with the original layout. In the end I think this is the worst Rock Candy controller I've ever had. ever used - but don't take it as a bad thing; no way! The D-Pad and buttons are beyond comfortable to use, the build quality is as excellent as I've come to expect from Rock Candy, and of course there's that chic translucent design that I love so much. Damn, for motion control I would even prefer it to the official remote control! Unfortunately, the side-by-side gameplay is stuttering and very frustrating; The Nyko remote will always be my first choice in this particular situation. Otherwise I'm happy with it. This is the first time a Rock Candy product has let me down and yet it pretty much makes up for that disappointment by being amazing in every other way.
