Ignore the bad reviews, you need this when you're fishing through walls. Yes, they DEFINITELY break. But I've been doing side electrical work for 12 years and I'm only on my third. This is much more useful than a straight or inflexible magnet as you can bend around the wall to get to the chain. A few tips: Don't pull the chain too hard. It breaks if pulled too hard. Use the chain to pull the rope through, THEN use the rope to pull the wire through. Do not bend the magnet abruptly or repeatedly without reason. Again, they will last for years if you treat them properly. Do not allow the circuit to touch the terminals of a live outlet when pulling through the junction box. Yes, I have. If the chain breaks, just tie a rope around it to make it long enough. I use a surgical knot and then tie it in place. Remember you don't need a lot of chain. It's easier to grab the end of the chain, and MUCH easier to thread the end through small holes (as opposed to pulling a loop from the middle). Try letting your chain hang about the right length to grab the end. Use your ears when trying to find the chain in the wall. You may feel or hear the magnet (or the magnet's handle) hitting the circuit. You can also feel the magnet bounce over each ball of the chain as you pull, but the chain won't go. Make sure you are using the correct end of the stick. They are very similar, but only one end has a magnet. Because of this, I had a rental company help me catch the chain for 15 minutes. I've also used a magnet to find and retrieve parts that have fallen into engines and such. Strong enough to loosen screws and flexibility allows you to get to all sorts of places (although I use an old one for the garage to keep the one that touches the walls clean). If you buy more chain, make sure it is magnetic. Much of what is available is not. I attached the wand to the fiberglass filament rods for more access to the interior of the rooms. Get one! Or two if one is lost.
