I recently decided that I needed surround sound in my living room, so I went underground and got a Mediabridge speaker wire under the floor from the wall in the middle of the house where the TV and audio components are, moved to the outside wall. where the surround speakers will be located. I cut a hole in the drywall for the wall panel and installed a metal frame in the hole. Pull the speaker wire up and connect the speakers to the back of the terminals on the wall plate. Put the wall plate on and screw it in place. Ready. Over the next few days, I started experimenting with the receiver to adjust the surround speakers (volume, distance, time delay, etc.). The sound output from the surround sound (Definitive Technology BP2X) was very quiet and weak even after turning on the surround output channels. A few days later I listened to it and my adult son asked me why it sounded so faint. We played around with the settings a bit and then he thought maybe I connected the speakers out of phase or something. He looked at the wires on the wall plate and decided to check the back of them as well. When he removed the wall panel, he immediately knew what the problem was. When the wall plate was installed on the wall, the exposed speaker wires pressed against the metal frame, shorting out the connections. This was an easy fix as we just stuck the black tape to the metal frame to keep the bare speaker wire from touching the metal. Problem solved and sounds great. I know I should have noticed this myself when I first installed it, but you might think that this issue is factored into the manufacture of speaker wall panels. The material for the frame should be plastic or something non-conductive. In fact, they make non-metallic, low-voltage mounts from "old work" which would probably be a better choice than using a metal frame on this product. Good quality wall panel. The metal frame is a part that you need to be careful with when installing.
