Review on πŸ“· Manfrotto 438 3/8 Ball Camera Leveler - Professional Grade Replacement, Black by Kevin Folsom

Great addition for panoramas

I use this with my Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro tripod legs (black) and my Manfrotto 488RC2 which has been replaced with a Manfrotto 488RC4 midi ball head with RC4 (3271) quick-disconnect system. I also use a Manfrotto 337 Hot Shoe 2 axis level with this setup. I am very comfortable. The only problem I had when I only had the head and tripod was that you had to use the legs to align the ball head perfectly and that was very difficult in many cases. This tool makes it easy. Simply adjust the legs so they are a little close, loosen the knob at 438, adjust the 438 until the ball head is level, then tighten the knob and start shooting. This greatly simplifies alignment. This adds some height (about 2 inches) and some weight to the build. I don't have exact weights, but I don't have an ultra-light setup like I used to. I wanted him to be strong. I carry the entire device on the back of a Kata HB-207 GDC Hiker backpack for a DSLR system or DV/HDV camcorder. (Insert trolley is optional) and that fits well. Because I wear it in the center back position that this pack offers, it doesn't take the weight off the center. Overall I'm very satisfied and would highly recommend it if you want to get a good panoramic shot.
