Review on 🌩️ ASUS ThunderboltEX 4: Intel Thunderbolt 4 JHL 8540 Controller, Dual USB Type-C Ports, 40Gb/s Bi-Directional Bandwidth, DisplayPort 1.4 Support, 100W Quick Charge by Amy Cook

It takes some effort to get it working with a Ryzen motherboard.

It took me a while to get the Thunderbolt4 card working on my ASUS Strix B550-A motherboard. After 14-1 connector cable, USB 2 cable and PCIE power. I need to go into BIOS to enable Thunderbolt features. The BIOS UI hides this option very deeply and I end up using F9 (Search) to enable Thunderbolt and set the chipset to Intel Maple Ridge (JHL8540). Well, manual steps seem necessary. After booting into Windows I can install the driver (from the CD or from the Asus website) and see the Thunderbolt controller on the PCIE bus. The Asus website also provides a firmware update, which I updated anyway. I still have an unresolved issue: I can't adjust the display setting above 4k 85Hz HDR. In theory, Thunderbolt4 should deliver 4k 144Hz HDR? I could be wrong, but in general the Thunderbolt 4 card works.

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Can't remember
