My skin got messy after using this toner

As soon as I opened the Mele Even Tone Post Cleanse Tonic, I couldn't help but notice the harsh and overpowering smell of musky and chemicals. But not just musk - a musty and aged musky scent. It was like finding and using a forgotten bottle of musk from the 70's. The opening for dispensing the tonic is on the smaller side so it took some effort to get the tonic out of the bottle. What I noticed when applying the toner to my face is that it sticks to my skin like other toners/toners I've used before. Surprisingly, there was no tingling or any real indication that I was using a tonic. However, there was one very noticeable difference. My face was really dirty and I felt the need to wash it again immediately. In addition to this unpleasant feeling, the strong tonic smell remained on my skin. It's the dominant scent and since I'm not a fan, leftovers are just repulsive. I tried using the toner for a few days but my face just felt dirty after each try. In the end I just had to stop. According to the manufacturer, this product is free from parabens, sulfates, alcohol and mineral oil. The manufacturer also points out that its ingredients contain alpha hydroxy acid, which may make users more vulnerable to the sun. I had really high hopes for the Mele Even Tone Post Cleanse Tonic, but unfortunately I was extremely disappointed.
