Review on Motorcraft SW5928 Cruise Control Switch by Paulo Heisler

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fits and works perfectly in my 2000 Explorer.

Looks like an exact replacement for a 15 year old on my truck. I am very satisfied with their work and installation. After reading many articles on the forum and watching many videos, I decided to take this job. My biggest concern was accidental airbag deployment. I followed all the instructions in the books and everything went well. One of the recommendations was to disconnect the battery and allow the system time to drain before doing anything. Be sure to follow these. I chose not to use the included wiring harness that came with these switches. (If you're already using the wiring harness in the car, you don't need to pull the steering wheel.) But that means I had to remove the new switches from the connectors on the new wiring harness. The connections on the switches have a shoulder. She. Don't just try to rip the wires off. They can't wiggle, and if you hold and tug on the wires, you can pull them out of the connectors. The tab is on the back of the switch (front view). You need to insert something thin into the connector on the back, something the width of the connector to push back the plastic lip and the connector will slide out. This can be very annoying. I've found the .010" stylus to work just as well as the slim Fender guitar pick. The hardest part of the operation is removing the old switches from the connectors. If you replace them, they must be bad, right? Trick if you're not trying to keep the old ones: Pry off the old, worn plastic on the front of the old switch. Then pry off the circuit board in the old switch. The connector will pop out to the right as the card is ejected. Make sure the connectors are properly aligned. If they are installed incorrectly, strange things can happen. I've read of someone who had a permanent horn until they straightened it. The battery is recharged and when you first start the car after playing with the airbag it's a good idea to get out of line in case it deploys. I did my first ride from the passenger seat.

Pros
  • Handy thing
Cons
  • For old
