I read bad reviews. I think I'd give it a try and just give it back if it's as bad as some say. I immediately thought it was bullshit, but that decision was made too soon. See, it's not a perfectly designed lamp, but my technique hasn't prevented me from running the siphon with a small python (rated for 10-20 gallons) with maximum ease and with only 1-2 pumps. Take the lightbulb and point the output side up. What I do is put the vacuum end as low as possible so as much water as possible gets in. Hold the bulb up to deflate. At 1-2 pumps I have a siphon 100% of the time. The idea is to have as much water as possible in the vacuum part so you don't have to pump as much, and for some reason having the bulb pointing up just works better for me. I don't know if it's that easy on larger models, but this method works for me and I find the bulb 100% worth buying.
