We have small targets that we set up in the yard and we thought they would be better than exercise balls. After one session, many balls develop dents that look almost like creases on the ball where the racquet hits the boards. Of course, the goal isn't to hit the ball with the edge of the racket, but it shouldn't damage your equipment during your first practice session.
