Review on Enhanced Boardwalk Arcade SkeeBall Electronic Video by Kendrick Barron

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Uneasy as hell, but you know what, it's quite fun and playable.

This is video pinball as it used to be, before today's complex physics simulations: floating ball mechanics, simplified special features, bizarre pinball behavior, etc. What did I expect. But I have to say I'm impressed with the care they've put into it nonetheless. They carefully reproduced the main features and loops of the game field, special modes, multiballs, rotating pizza. They made the marquee a separate screen with interactive elements. You have a smart alternative to the plunger (hold the button longer to shoot harder). The flipper buttons on the side can narrow your fingers a bit, so they're duplicated on the back of the device so you can hold it whole. And they reproduced, willy-nilly, all the voices of the boys. Pooh. And if I'm not mistaken, unlike most games in the Tiny Arcade series, it actually saves your high scores. Not so good - the "Start the game" / "Game over" text is comically blocky, like in an Atari 2600 game, and pops up on the playfield. I don't know why they didn't put it where it was on the LCD screen. The ball vibrates strangely on habits. A couple of times, especially in multiball, the ball just fell through the flipper loop. But that doesn't cause much concern, and it's easy to laugh at her. A warning to sensitive and/or younger users: I always found April's presentation in the original pinball to be overly sexy (she's a hero herself). , no frosting damn) but it looks like this in a stripped down version. well, very different. In general, this method exceeded all my expectations. And it's really a lot of fun! I'm not interested in other boardwalk arcade games yet, but I'd happily buy more pinball games like this if they were at the same level of playability.

Pros
  • High resolution LCD screen with digital scoring screen
Cons
  • Expensive
