They have a rough finish out of the box, but a sharp edge 1.) isn't really necessary unless you're really using a hand finish, and 2.) adds a TON to the cost. But this tool comes with a magnetic file in the handle. It's also crude, but works great. Steel on iron is good, but not perfect. It needs touching up regularly, more so than a carbide scraper (obviously), but it's 1.) much more reusable and 2.) can be fine-tuned to whatever you want to do. I can use the file to make a nice burr hook on the edge to remove thick paint/finish (I used it to remove heavy dense paint from an Ikea chair) and then place it on the stone and looping for a thin edge that won't last very long but leaves a fine, handcrafted finish. It's very similar to a closet scraper, to be honest, but easier to use and a bit more versatile. I have exactly three complaints, all minor. 1.) no "flat" edge. One is close, but it's still sharp as a planer's knife. This is easily remedied with a few sharpenings of the file, you can straighten that edge and just leave the corners rounded so it doesn't streak like a carbide scraper. 2.) The included file works to loosen the screw holding the blade, but only. It's not very pleasant to use, although it works well. You should grind the tail of the file into the flat of the screwdriver (I did) 3.) The screw holding the blade is JUST too big for the blade to slip through. This would make it much easier to change blades quickly, but it's a little oversized. Eventually I could sharpen it, but if they made it about 1/16 inch narrower in diameter it wouldn't negatively affect performance and would allow you to change blades by just loosening the screw, not removing it. , these are all little things. This thing is a search tool. I love having both a carbide scraper with disposable blades and this one, but when I squeeze I reach for it five times more often for the smaller pieces of furniture I make. This rough cut kit and fine cut cardboard scraper are basically the only things you need to finish your furniture.
