Review on SanDisk SDDR 299 A46 Extreme Reader Black by Seth Damain

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Super fast. Small and light.

I received this card reader as part of my Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Premium bundle with 64GB SanDisk CFast 2.0 card and reader/writer so this was not a custom order so I am not showing it as a one verified buyer. The card reader works great. It downloads files at lightning speed via USB3 and so far I haven't had any connection issues. One interesting thing about this reader is that neither my Windows 10 nor OSX El Capitan computers recognize memory cards as memory cards. You see them as standard external drives. (Look at the screenshots and note the different text/icons.) I suspect this is due to the cFast standard, which is essentially a SATA interface. What are the implications of this? Well, if you have set Lightroom or another application to automatically launch and go to the import screen when you insert a memory card, this feature will no longer work with cFast cards. (That's fine with me, I trigger these operations manually anyway.) Lucky in disguise, El Capitan no longer tries to get the Photos app down my throat when one of these cards is installed. Potential downsides are that if you have tools designed specifically to work with memory cards (such as deleted photo recovery apps), they may not recognize those cFast cards as a valid recovery source. I have two different brands of cFast cards and this behavior is the same for both. Especially if you are looking for a fast, reliable, and lightweight cFast 2.0 card reader, this is a good choice.
