I was looking for a trellis to place at the bottom of the stairs, read the reviews, checked it out in local stores, collected reviews from colleagues and finally decided on this one based on their reviews. It was definitely the right choice. Although the goal has a crossbar at the bottom like all insertion goals, this one proved to be the best choice given how well it held up against our 1 year old's attacks. He's a single-minded toddler who can move furniture and get out of the crib on his own, but he has yet to overcome that barrier. The combination of mounting cups with pressure allows these gates to stay in place while attempting to disengage or climb over them. Luckily, the metal bars don't provide enough support for his little legs, but the wooden bars on our cradle do. I don't think the small metal hinges of traditional gates will withstand such an attack for more than a day or two. I also like that they can be easily removed and reattached when needed - just loosen the tension screws. - So the ability to move large items or furniture up or down the stairs is not limited by the width of the gate. Update (08/01/2013): There was a problem with this gate, the spring loaded pop up at the top of the gate that is supposed to keep the gate securely closed was kind of stuck in and wouldn't come out. An email to customer service and an identical replacement gate was sent to my address along with the return labels. Terrific!
