Review on Digital Thermometer Instant Temperature Material by Steven Chiumento

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Comfortable but some silly design flaws.

Purchased specifically for making candies and tempering chocolate. Exceptionally comfortable. Brilliant though. However, I used it twice and noticed the following: The pen got too hot. I had to hold it with an oven mitt to stir the caramel on the stove. The thermometer probe is removed from the handle for cleaning and the metal passes through the entire handle to the digital reader at the top. I have two problems with it: 1. It's not waterproof. There is a tiny hole in the digital reader part that leads directly to the circuit board inside. I must have gotten water inside when rinsing it between batches because the second time I used it was 2 after a few days. It stopped working *just* when my candy hit the critical temp (300 degrees) reached! Luckily, I immediately had a second backup thermometer. After that I used an eyeglass repair screwdriver to pry open the battery compartment and found that the battery had already formed rust which was causing the malfunction. I ran some steel wool over the contacts and over the battery, put it back in and it worked fine again. Just remember that only the bottom part of the handle can get wet. In my opinion, a tiny hole in the reading part is a stupid design flaw.
