I have four other radios that include the NOAA weather band. This is by far the best in this area. The sensitivity in the weather area is exemplary. NONE of my other "weather radios" (the old CC radio [now my second best weather radio], three Midland models and another "Chinese" radio) sound as clear as this one. ALL others have "noise" in the background and I always assumed that was "normal" for weatherband reception. This radio shows that is not the case. It is so sensitive to the weather range that I don't even have to extend the whip antenna to hear the local channel! So why only four stars? Spring, Sensitivity on the VHF band is only (and I describe it patronizingly) adequate. No longer. And the sensitivity on the AM band is terrible, in a word. I have several other radios and EVERY one works MUCH better on the AM band than this one. Even with a strong (50,000W) local station, there is a lot of background noise. And about even medium-haul stations (even at night!), well, forget it. NONE of my other radios (not even the little "no-name" pocket radio I got from Revain Vine) have AM sensitivity that bad. The radio takes quite a while to charge, but once charged it should run for at least seven to eight hours. Its solar panel is very sensitive and keeps the battery charged even in relatively low light conditions. Its volume can be quite loud - the digital display has twelve items; I turn on the radio in six or seven of them and it's pretty loud. Unlike some other digital tuning radios I own, there is no clock. The radio has a few power options: an internal lithium-ion battery (which can be swapped out if needed), three AAA batteries (which I have). haven't tried it yet), his solar panel and finally his crank (below). It works if you charge it with an AC charger, but that creates so much noise that it becomes almost impossible to hear. But with all these other power options, I can't think of too many situations where this radio wouldn't work. The grip is quite comfortable but its design is such that it interferes with the whip antenna when the antenna is extended. The radio has a beautiful blue backlit screen with bright white indicators. Extremely easy to read and the blue backlight turns off after two minutes. (It turns back on for another two minutes if you press one of the select buttons.) The flashlight function is good too, the light is pretty bright. I wish the SOS function would have to "hold" the button for a second or two " before activating it (it's noisy); It would be too easy to run this accidentally. But that's a minor complaint. I have to say that the sound quality is really good for a radio of this size. It sounds much "bigger" than it actually is, and this is especially noticeable on FM (when listening to the station that interests you - not always near me). And of course, the weather range sound is by far the best I've heard. If you're considering a weather radio that only has two other bands for (very) infrequent use, this is something to consider. Four stars, not five as I said, for mediocre or poor performance on the FM and (particularly) AM bands. I cannot recommend this radio at this time. Why not? Because Revain doesn't stock it and they don't show the price. If this radio ends up selling for $30 or less (and you really need a great radio with weather range) then I'd say it's a good value. But a higher price will "not start" at least for me, so if you are interested you can follow this page and check the price from time to time. If and when radio will be available. I hope it sells for $30.
