Benson continues my review of obsolete USB Type-C cables. This time I'm reviewing the TRIPP LITE 3' USB 3.1 Gen 1 5Gb/s USB Type-C USB-C to USB Type A Cable. This cable does not comply with the USB Type C version 1.1 specification. To find the specification, go to usb.org and look at developer/usbtypec. Specifically, when using this charging cable, the Chromebook Pixel will attempt to draw 3A of current through the cable, which may damage the USB hub or charger on the A side, which is not guaranteed at 3A. Let's see it in action. I connected the TRIPP LITE cable to my Chromebook Pixel and this Dell charger: Replacement Dell 10W Wall Charger for Venue 8 Pro/8/7 (XDN34). Let's run the ectool command: localhost # ectool --name cros_pd usbpdpowerPort 0: SNK Type-C charger 1585mV/3000mA max 5000mV/3000mA/15000mW Port 1: SRC The charger has shut down or the overcurrent protection has tripped and only outputs 1.6V. The Pixel is currently not charging. See Section 4.11 of the Type-C specification and the following note: 1. For Rp, when implemented in a USB Type-C connector on a USB Type-C to USB 3.1 Standard A cable, a USB -Type-C to USB 2.0 Micro -B The adapter assembly or USB Type-C cable connected to a USB host should use 56kΞ© Β± 5% to avoid an IR drop on V BUS and GND im to withstand the mounted cable. In other words, since you are building a USB Type-C connector to assemble a USB 3.1 Type-A connector, you need to use a 56kΞ© resistor as a pull-up on the CC (configuration channel). Based on my testing, your cable uses a 10k ohm pull, which is illegal if the other end of the cable or adapter is an obsolete Type A or Type B plug or jack. Please let me know if there is anything else. I can provide information on why these adapters are problematic. For consumers, I do not recommend purchasing this cable as it may damage your PC's charger, hub, or USB ports.
