Review on πŸ“· Enhance Lens Versatility: VILTROX EF-R2 Canon EF EF-S to Canon RF Camera Mount Adapter with AF & Custom Control Ring for Canon EOS R R5 R6 RP Cameras by Bryan Turner

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Almost 4. But nowhere near the Canon official version

I had both the original Canon EF-RF adapter with control ring and the Viltrox. My camera gear was stolen, including the EOS R and the official Canon adapter. So I have enough experience to compare Canon and Viltrox. I've taken Viltrox for 2 photoshoots so I feel like I've had a good experience with it. I use it with my Canon EOS R5. I would buy a Canon (even though it's twice the price) but it's very hard to find. Overall, Viltrox is a solid product at a fantastic price. You get basically the same functionality as the Canon original. However, it doesn't compare well if you've ever used a Canon. Canon is a perfect match for the camera. It attaches very smoothly and is almost fake. There is no rattling between the adapter and the lens or between the adapter and the camera body. Wiltrox is a different story. I can feel the EF lens moving slightly when attached to the adapter. In fact, I worry that the constant attaching and detaching of the Viltrox will wear down the mount of my EOS R5 in a way I've never worried about an official Canon mount. Canon's control ring is very smooth but noisy (due to clicking). noise during rotation and when hitting the markers on the dial). You can pay Canon to disable the adapter. The Viltrox control ring is a lot quieter, but the feel is a lot blurrier. Canon always works under all circumstances and how it responds to your dial rotations is predictable. The Viltrox does its job well, but sometimes the turn doesn't register exactly the same. Sometimes in digital form it spins faster than actual physical movement. Sometimes it doesn't do anything when you rotate it. For the most part this works fine. It's just not as predictable as Canon. The value is difficult to quantify. Viltrox is half the price of Canon with almost the same functionality. But you can feel the labels used to get half the price. I'm keeping the Viltrox and will be using it until I buy an official Canon. I will still keep Viltrox with me if I get a second corpse.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
