I had an old Morris chair that needed reupholstery as the springs were too obvious in the original seat. It's a little off the size and I had to cut about two inches from one end. The important word there"piece". Take a large bread knife and slowly but firmly cut away the foam, skimming a little bit at a time. The result is a perfectly smooth and clean line. I covered the styrofoam, added a piece of wood to the bottom of the chair and placed the styrofoam on top of the wood.
