Works very well. It gets hot enough to melt the glue, and when the melted glue comes out of the tip, the glue itself is hot, but still not hot enough to seriously burn anyone. Since it doesn't get as hot as other glue guns, the glue seems to dry faster, so you'll have to be quick. If you applied the adhesive to a small area, apply it immediately and then move on to the next small area. You cannot apply glue around the edges of an 8x11 sheet of paper unless it dries before you finish the perimeter. About 8 glue sticks are included in the kit, which is enough for a number of projects. We've already used it to build a pirate ship and a decorated insect container (about the size of a pint of ice cream). It took about 2 sticks. I wish there was some sort of case for extra glue sticks and the product itself. Maybe a little felt pouch.
