So I didn't use this as a mattress cover but as a sofa cushion cover. We have an older cat who occasionally pees on the couch. It's not often, maybe once or twice a year, but still a pain when it happens. It has a machine washable fabric cover but the pillow inside is a real dilemma. I have a mixture that I use to get rid of the smell that works wonders but you have to soak the area completely until it dries out so there is no couch seating. Instead, I chose to cover the pillow with a waterproof mattress topper. We have them on our beds and they work really well, so why not on the couch? I wrapped it around the pillow and then pulled the fabric cover over it, making sure any empty spots were folded up. It worked great! No bulkiness and bulges. I purposely spilled some water to see if it leaked and it didn't! It may seem strange, but I'm glad I thought about it. Now that those awkward moments happen, I don't have to worry about a big pillow. I just wash and dry the covers in the washing machine and we're back in business! In addition, this did not affect the comfort of the sofa in any way. I just wish I had thought about it beforehand.
