I've always used my laptop on a horizontal surface, but I've decided to utilize the space on my desk as I use an external monitor. I have found that I can use the space with this stand. That turned out to be a good decision, I now have my MacBook Pro on a stand, the computer runs noticeably warmer, and the external drives and monitor connect to the Mac without a tangle of cables. The stand came in a very nice box (Apple style), very easy to install, detailed instructions. It's very durable, with a nice finish and rubberized in some places to protect the computer from potential scratches. On the plus side, you can hide your drives under the system since that gives you about 3 inches of space on the back of the system when the computer is mounted. I am very happy with this stand, it helps me to save space on my desk.
