Review on Tiffen 77VND 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter: Perfect for Camera Lenses, Black by Lawrence Allison

Works well for accessories

The amateur photographer is here. This is the only variable ND filter I've used, so I can't say if it's the best. But it definitely enabled me to get very good long exposure shots. I love that it's bolt-on and adjustable, which seems a lot easier to set up than the rectangular glass pieces and assembly. I went with the larger 77mm which allowed me to easily get adapters for smaller threaded diameter lenses. A few notes on why I gave it 4/5 stars: 1) When I first got the filter I found it very difficult to change/rotate the ND setting. It seems clogged, I thought the filter was bad. But after I loosened it, it spins smoothly now. 2) I wish it didn't prevent spinning above ND min/max. Sometimes I turned it over the maximum and was afraid I might damage it. 3) Not sure if this is my lens or filter, but I've just started using it on a Nikon 12-24mm f/4 DX lens and I'm getting severe blackout at the maximum neutral density setting . So you have to go down. It worked great with the included 18-55mm DX lens and 35mm f/1.8 DX lens (with screw adapter). Maybe that's how it works with the new lenses I'm using (which have the same 77mm thread size as the filter). ).
