Versatile and convenient, but with limitations.

Versatile but eventually returned to try square filters instead. Pros: You can focus by setting it to a lower aperture setting and then cranking it. If you have used fixed aperture filters you cannot do this, you must remove the filters as it is difficult for the camera to focus with too many filters. Difficult to use in conjunction with special circular polarization (because two polarized lenses are used, facing each other to create variability). Tips: Use the focus back button! Set the filter

Works well for accessories

The amateur photographer is here. This is the only variable ND filter I've used, so I can't say if it's the best. But it definitely enabled me to get very good long exposure shots. I love that it's bolt-on and adjustable, which seems a lot easier to set up than the rectangular glass pieces and assembly. I went with the larger 77mm which allowed me to easily get adapters for smaller threaded diameter lenses. A few notes on why I gave it 4/5 stars: 1) When I first got the filter I found it very…

Rear diameter and front diameter are different

I have a 58mm variable ND filter because the lens I want to screw it into is 58mm in diameter. The back, which screws into the camera lens, is 58mm in diameter. Then the front of the filter is larger. I've read that it's more about reducing the amount this lens blocks light in the corners of wide-angle lenses. For myself I can confirm that this front thread diameter is 67mm. I was able to screw on the JJC 67mm hood. I use this on a Micro Four Thirds Lumix 12-35mm lens. I can take full advantage

Weird Color Cast & Vignette

Overview I have this ND filter to control the shutter speed when shooting music videos and other videos, but it is not suitable for both. Of course, it controls shutter speed as it should, but read on if you don't want to make the same mistake I did. It seems to be of high quality, it's very easy to get the exposure you need for a given shutter angle and it matches the lenses perfectly. I have Tiffen fixed ND filters and they are great. POOR 1 - Tint: This filter adds a serious green/blue tint…

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine

I have a Nikon D7200, I'm going to Iceland in a few days and after watching a lot of videos I thought that a ND filter might be a good thing for photographing waterfalls and the sea. A variable density filter seemed like a good compromise as I'm not a pro, will probably only use it a couple of times a year and don't want to invest a lot of money in a filtration system. I really appreciated the Tiffen name and after reading many reviews I thought I would take the risk of buying a Tiffen 82mm VND

An absolutely indispensable piece of equipment.

I hesitated for a long time before I finally bought this variable ND filter. I knew it was important, but I could always do without it for the most part, unless I was shooting in broad daylight with no cloud cover. After making this purchase, I don't know how I went without it for so long. There are a few things to consider when purchasing an ND filter. First you need Tiffen Variable ND. There are a few cheaper ones (around $15 for example) but they are very poorly made and give the footage a…

Great price and high performance

I bought this for video purposes. I am not a professional videographer. I mostly shoot family moments in the run and shoot style. Pros: 82mm. Six levels of coverage. Cons: No hard stops. I helped control the light and get my desired shutter speed. I find the picture quality excellent. There is a slight color cast but I can't fix anything in post. I correct color in all shots, so this is not an obstacle for me. When I buy filters I always buy 82mm filters and use reinforcement rings that fit my…
