I bought a top quality electric sharpener a year ago but lent it to a friend who bought a set of crayons, all unsharpened. Spring. That was five months ago and I still haven't gotten it back. And recently I felt like creating a drawing with my large set of Prismacolor Premier colored pencils. Shortly after starting this project I realized, gosh, I don't have a pencil sharpener. So I went to Staples and bought a Staedler sharpener. I already have Staedler drawing pencils and a few other Staedler products and they were all good quality so I figured this $6 item might work as well. It was a choice: buy this, or a very cheap school pencil sharpener, or a much more "professional" and expensive (electric) pencil sharpener. So I went. I had to sharpen a red pencil. Note that the core of these Prismacolor pencils is quite soft and contains wax. Because of this, they are notoriously difficult to sharpen to a perfect point. So I put the pencil in the big hole and slowly but steadily rotated the pencil a total of five times. I thought let me see if it needs more revs or not. I could not believe my eyes! The pencil was perfectly sharpened to a nice sharp red point. I know there are videos on youtube of sharpening these pencils because so many people have trouble sharpening them like chips, bumps, angled tips etc. No problem with that little bad boy. He sharpened my pencil perfectly. The blade must be very good! Since then I've sharpened many more pencils from the Prismacolor pencil set I have and never had a single problem. Here are some helpful tips: Always use a wider opening. Do not insert the pen too far. Until it stops without putting any pressure on him. If you feel the hole isn't small enough, don't worry, just tread gently and eventually the sharpener will "grab" the pencil. Sharpen slowly and slowly. steady pace, three turns if this is your first time. When spinning, don't start pushing the pin harder or putting too much pressure on it, just let the blade do its job. Check the pin after a few turns, turn it once or twice. more if necessary For pencils with a good but not sharp end, 2 turns can be enough. Save time by always having this sharpener handy. Very sharp ends are always fragile, so be careful with the pencil. On a piece of scrap paper, carefully make a few circles, holding the pencil vertically. You can see some "junk" coming out. This removes that super-sharp tip just enough so you can draw thin lines with light pressure without breaking. When using this sharpener for the first time, start with three turns and then test. After using this Prismacolors sharpener a few times, you'll feel it and only turn the sharpener as many times as necessary without wasting a single pencil. These pens are not cheap. The enemy of sharpening any kind of pencil is over-sharpened and blunt blades. Always be careful when using a freshly sharpened pencil. The sharper the point, the easier they can break, but they won't break if you follow my instructions. The key is to be careful when sharpening and to count the turns. Check your point after three or four turns, don't press the pencil too hard, and when sharpening, don't push the pencil deeper than when you started. Lots of explanations but very easy to do if you follow the advice. Above! Save money on electric sharpeners. They're too spicy, no matter how good they are. You lose a valuable pencil lead.
