Opened the end of the USB port and changed RX and TX on the board, and now the FW update works successfully and the FW update utility can report the version numbers of HW, FW and database. It's funny that UART signaling has been around for decades, but people still swap RX/TX signals when connecting two devices. One star off for having to redesign the cable to make it work properly.
