Review on Yamaha NS SW100BL Powered Subwoofer Black by Daniel Truett

Ease of use for amplifier with built in crossover and phase

There was a Yamaha YST-SW45 8 inch subwoofer which was good but didn't go below 30-35Hz. up to 50 Hz that just wasn't enough. I liked the sound of Yamaha subwoofers so I went in search of a decent but not overly expensive subwoofer with at least 25Hz. Street one. In fact, this is a hybrid of the younger YST-SW216 and the more expensive NS-SW300. It has more or less specs of 216 with a twisted pair port of 300. What it doesn't have are speaker level inputs with a built in adjustable crossover (for amps/receivers that don't have a subwoofer output and built in crossover). . However, if you don't need it, it's just an extra charge; Luckily, my Pioneer receiver has built-in subwoofer output, crossover and extended subwoofer signal, so I didn't need speaker inputs. It also doesn't have a sleep mode, although I never used it on the SW45 as it's not sensitive enough - you really needed a loud bass signal to wake it up. Easy connection - just power cord, power switch, RCA subwoofer input and volume. I plugged it in, set the crossover to 50Hz with an extended subwoofer signal on the receiver, set the volume to mid and put on some tunes. Deep bass sounded good, but mid-bass from 40 to 100 was very weak. So I set the crossover to 80Hz and increased the volume on the sub by 3/4 and 40-100Hz came back, but then below 40Hz was really stuffed up. Then I remembered the phase adjustment - the old SW was tilted to the side, and I switched to antiphase for better sound, but due to the location of the connector on this subwoofer, it just worked, and it turned out that the extended mid-bass Signals have been deleted. When I switched the phase back to common mode, moved the crossover back to 50Hz but left the extended bass signal and rolled back to half volume, it all came together nicely. If your receiver/amp is capable of it, I find this subwoofer to be a good choice for a simple setup and sounds good for both movies and music.
