The Tioga City Slickers

are strikingly similar to the old ones. At that time the road was very muddy and the steep inclines (10-15%) were too much for my road bike, so I hybridized my mountain bike with Mitsuboshi's (no typo) Tioga City Slicker tires from Japan. I opted for a wider version of the tire in the back and they could handle 90psi. This configuration allowed me to use my lower mountain bike gear but still have the ultra-low rolling resistance of road tires on my way to the 14,110-foot summit. These CyclingDeal tires (made by Kenda) are remarkably similar with nearly identical tread patterns, but are limited to 65psi. . As with the City Slicker, the water flow pattern is primarily for mental reassurance as many drivers feel comfortable seeing some form of profile. Three slots and a series of recessed V-notches break up the smoothness of the surface. There is a 1.5mm wide and 2mm deep groove in the bottom center of the tire. On either side of the center slit is a zigzag arrowhead shaped slit, 1.5mm wide and 2mm deep, identical to the City Slickers. This set consists of two narrow hoops tightly wrapped in plastic that are placed side by side. Smooth tires like these are for roads too rough for a regular road bike. Such roads are still safe enough to trade regular trail tire lugs for the "fuel mileage” required for 75-mile dirt road trips. It's definitely a niche use. When winter comes I will be using these slicks on my home scooters.
