You don't wear pants!

I should have noticed that none of the models on the book cover were wearing pants. I guess it's my fault that I was disappointed to discover that trying on pants isn't part of this book. In fact, the trousers only appear in one or two illustrations and are briefly mentioned in a paragraph. It turns out that there is another book by these authors dedicated to pants. I bought the book because I've been sewing for a long time and have sewn everything except lined jackets, but you can always learn something new. And indeed, I have collected some tips and ideas that will come in handy when trying on tops and jackets. The problem with commercial patterns is that they are scattered as widely as possible across the map. You can't fit them all the same way and get the same fit. As I got older and, shall we say, rougher, it became harder and harder for me to make things work. I agree with others that the fabric cutting, which is the bulk of this book, is difficult and not always helpful as tissue paper fits differently. as fabric. However, as I looked at photos of pins that matched different models, I realized I had some issues and how I could try the ideas from the book without attaching fragile tissue paper to my body. I always have a roll of paper on hand to trace patterns. This preserves the original, makes it less likely that I'll cut along the wrong lines on a multi-size pattern (because I only draw the right ones!), and drives me crazy making adjustments. If I wanted to attach the pin, I could do it without tearing the original pattern beyond repair. I can always go back to the original pattern details and recreate if my experiments go too far. I highly recommend purchasing a roll of muslin on sale and making muslin. It doesn't take long, and it gives you a better idea of whether it's right for you than going crazy with pattern tissue paper. All in all I have no regrets about buying the book (except for the pants!) I look forward to trying a few things on the next jacket I make.

Pros
  • practical item
Cons
  • so far so good
