Review on Teal Silhouette Smooth Heat Transfer Material by Carrie Spencer

Disappointing!

I love my silhouette cameo, I have cut paper, card and vinyl with it. Decided to try thermal transfer vinyl. I've read product reviews online, learned tutorials from popular bloggers, and tips from Pinterest and YouTube videos. The reviews were raving so I took the plunge and ordered 5 different colors of thermal transfer vinyl. I loved the color - very pretty - and it cut great with my machine. However, when I started using my iron to transfer vinyl to fabric, I ran into problems. I've tried both overalls and canvas bags and neither seemed like the right material for this vinyl. I followed T's instructions, nada. Then I tried to shorten or lengthen the time. Tried more/less pressure. I've tried different fabric weights between vinyl and iron, I've tried LOTS of stuff and nothing good has come of it. My drawings warped or came off shortly after application. The best I could get was very thin cotton between vinyl and iron, intense pressure for about 40 seconds on medium settings (no steam). I still had to use tweezers to loosen the vinyl from the plastic backing in most places where it wasn't sticking and then iron it all back once the paste was removed. Some of the stains aren't even set yet and I'm not sure they'll hold up with a gentle wash. I'm very frustrated because I'm tired of having so many different ways to get this to work and it just doesn't work. I consider myself a very smart person and am baffled as to why my heat transfers aren't working, especially after reading the "it's that easy" reviews on popular craft and mom blogs. I got this to make baby bodysuits to sell and give away but would be embarrassed to give/sell them as I feel like they won't be worn more than once. I wish I'd spent $100 on that stupid vinyl. I'm going to try some freezer paper stencils and fabric paint. hopefully with better luck.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

Decent product. Way, way overpriced.
