Attaches to top center of door. When I open the storm door, it turns on and stays on until I find the key, unlock the door, and stays on until I close the door. Doesn't turn on during the day. band holds up well. I like it enough to write this review! UPDATE: After 4 months the light went on and off by itself. To rule out outside interference, I put it in a dark corner and it kept blinking on and off. Changed battery, no difference. It's disposable and not worth buying. I think that's why you get 2! Try another brand, I will. But then again, I'm just a FOG, and what do I know?
