Another great pattern book for small realistic knitted animals

KNIT YOUR ZOOS - another great collection of patterns for small knitted animals (not quite suitable for knitted toys) from the authors of Knit Your own dog and knit your own cat. These patterns are well written with clear instructions but will likely require intermediate (or higher) knitting skills as each animal is made up of many small pieces. For example, a wonderful giraffe is assembled from (1) right back. leg, (2) left hind leg, (3) right front leg, (4) left front leg, (5) right side of body, (6) left side of body, (7) head, (8) abdomen, (9) ears, (10) tail and (11) mane. The leg pieces are held on the stitch holders until it's time to add the body; Some loops of the body are also held on the loop holders until it's time to add the head; etc. "Fifteen” giraffes are knitted using the Fair Isle and Intarsia method. The mane is crocheted; eyes are embroidered; the tail is finished with a loop seam; "Horns" are pipe cleaners. Finished with pipe cleaners to help when the animal gorges. Patterns are written out with line-by-line instructions. The animals are knitted from fine yarn on US 2 and US 3 needles. I am amazed at how well the authors capture the basic characteristics of the animals so that each finished animal is immediately recognizable as the zoo animal it is meant to be. I love giraffes, mandrills, bats, armadillos, Koalas, leopards and crocodiles! until it's time to add the body; Some loops of the body are also held on the loop holders until it's time to add the head; etc. "Fifteen” giraffes are knitted using the Fair Isle and Intarsia method. Yarn size is hard to find, directions are slightly hard to follow for a pattern labeled 'easy'.
