I have replaced the fan motor on my AC unit and everyone has been advised to replace the contactor at the same time. I had a contractor (who only switched one 240v branch) but I did a little research and found that most AC contractors running their own business only have two branch contactors to save space on their truck save up. Some manufacturers claim this is some sort of leakage current flowing through a branch to keep the motor slightly warm. At least on my model this is not possible as there is no neutral wire to return this leakage current. Switching one leg is electrically the same as switching both, unless the current returns through ground (which the code doesn't allow in almost all cases). My AC unit doesn't even have a ground connection. If a ground connection is present, it must be "grounded" through the metal brackets that hold the AC unit in the concrete wall. My device has been running for a few days and had no problems with the contactor. The holes coincided with the old one, it was only necessary to unscrew the old one and connect the new one by pulling the main disconnect switch.
