When the bike box arrived I thought it was an interesting and innovative design. But I could see how a proper conclusion can potentially confuse the uninitiated. In fact, the box came with a warning from the manufacturer that it would be a good idea to ask security at the front desk to check. which fit well by the way) and packed various cycling apparel and accessories, I managed to close the box properly and even wrote (in silver marker) some guidelines on how to overlap the box to close it properly. When I checked in for my flight, I found that even though I was in First Class, there was a $150 surcharge for "plus size" (my first little surprise). I asked a TSA agent to come in for a visual inspection (recommended by the company). The TSA agent was actually a keen cyclist and inspected the bike, accessories, etc. I then sealed the box (correctly) and gave it to him to collect. Upon arrival at London Heathrow Airport, the crate appeared (not on the big carousel). effectively almost to pieces. At some point along the way, a security guard decided to recheck the contents and completely failed to put it back together properly. As a result, the two halves almost fell apart. The container had several large gaps, so I immediately inspected the contents. Luckily the bike was fine and since I had the accessories strapped to the frame (in plastic bags) nothing was missing in the suitcase. However, it took quite a bit of juggling to assemble the crate properly as it obviously took several hours to assemble WRONG and parts of the crate were bent! I know it's not the manufacturer's fault, but unfortunately this box is too complicated for a regular security guard to reassemble. It's all very well to have an intelligent design, but it also has to be intuitive. In the end I chose not to return to the US with either the pits or the bike as my return journey was from the UK (in this case) via Italy and from there back to the States. I was so concerned about possible misassembly and subsequent damage/loss to both the shell and the bike. Maybe I'll decide to come home later with my box and bike. In short, I am very disappointed in this case, especially given the significant financial cost and the end result. I would probably be better off (especially with the additional baggage costs) if I just shipped my bike via one of FedEx or UPS's online services and in a box.
