Some controllers have memory. Some not.
The good news is that they're cheap ($0.05 per bulb) and reliable; I ripped the wire out of some lightbulbs and stapled them together and the strings continue to burn. The bad news is that some controllers are running out of memory; when power is applied, they always start in combined mode. However, some of them have a memory and start up in the mode they were in when the power was cut off. I bought 46 strings and tested each controller. 16 have memory and 30 don't. But 16 is enough for me, because I have connected at least 6 threads of each color together. BTW it says not to connect more than 5 strings but I did 8 and they work fine.
