So my 9 year old wants to build robots. After speaking to engineers at work, they recommended starting with the Arduino platform. This kit contains everything you need to learn Arduino. It includes many different sensors to play with, as well as code to make it work. It's still too young to do it all on our own but we followed simple tutorials and within an hour we had the fan running and we programmed it to turn on and off with a photocell. On the second day we programmed the LED matrix to make emojis and the passive bus to play 3 blind mice. This set will be fun for both me and him! When things get confusing we just turned to Youtube where there are literally thousands of Arduino projects.
