***Updated 5/24/2019*** Believe it or not, I recently found a 'heavy' setting on my front loading washing machine. I was always afraid to use it because the instruction manual said it can be used on colorfast/durable garments. I started using it on my husband's work clothes and found that it uses a lot more water and gets his clothes very clean. I wash all our clothes on this program now, but for work clothes I use a continuous press, which also uses a lot more water than the 'normal' program. After making this change, I am now using the recommended dosage of Charlie's Soap with incredibly fantastic results; I don't think our clothes have ever been so clean. I no longer use dryer sheets (I think they contributed to the residue feeling, oops) and our clothes are so soft. I've been using Charlie's Soap my whole life! Unfortunately, my Charlie's soap has been sitting on a shelf in my laundry room for a long time; Ever since I got the front loading washing machine I have had a love hate relationship with it and I had to stop using the Charlie washing machine because it stopped working for me at that point. When I had a regular washing machine, I used 1 to 1.5 scoops when the laundry was particularly dirty. When I got my high-efficiency front-loading (FL HE) washing machine, I used a dustpan and left residue on my clothes. And what confuses me is that Charlie's Soap's website even tells you to use the amount of detergent based on the weight or size of the load, not whether it's a high-efficiency or standard washing machine, so I did . This led to dirty, itchy and not so fresh clothes. I started using Charlie's liquid and only used about a tablespoon of the liquid, which is half the recommended amount, and while I got pretty good results, I hated the mess in it. Then I tried Nelly's and although it rinsed cleaner there was no stain fighting power, then I tried Molly's and it was even worse. Then I spoke (or complained) to my friend who also has a FL HE washer but uses UPP Norwex and she said she uses half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of UPP per load. I found it hard to understand, but her point was that you just can't expect a HE washer that uses so little water to perform well with too much detergent. Detergent does not wash off with water, so stains and dirt are not effectively washed off and then rinsed away. The logic was there as I know that on a normal wash cycle on my FL'er I can't even see the water level it uses so little water. Although it was very difficult for me at first, in the end I decided to follow a friend's advice. I had a small/medium load that needed washing. There was a grass stained shirt and some smelly campfire clothes mixed in with the weight and I just used 1/2 teaspoon of charlie and you know what!?! The clothes came out sparkling clean and odor free! Just like they did when I used Charlie with my standard washing machine. Not wanting to get too excited but have continued down this path and now use 1/2 tsp for light/medium loads, 1 tsp for medium/large loads and 1 and 1/2 tsp for very heavy loads (no matter what batch size). I always use 1/2 teaspoon). For bedding I use 2 teaspoons or 2/3 tablespoons as the bedding cycle uses more water and is very stressful. Now I'm sooooo glad I didn't give up on Charlie's because I've finally broken my love-hate relationship with my front loader and my clothes are just the way I like them, fresh, clean and odor free. I also believe that most people who leave bad reviews are simply using too much detergent. I know it all depends on the type of high-efficiency washing machine you have and the softness/hardness of the water, but my washing machine uses very little water and my water is pretty soft, so this works for me. So my advice is to experiment and not give up. You might not think what works is a sufficient cleanser, but it is so highly concentrated and such a good product that if you add the right amount, it can work as it should. Without a doubt, this is my favorite "green" cleaner. I never thought I would be so excited about laundry detergent, but I take pride in providing my family with clean clothes that I know are safe. And I love that it's eco-friendly too. I still pre-treat stains if I remember, but this cleaner works so well. Sorry for the long review, I'm just excited and wanted to share what worked for me!
