Review on ๐ŸงŠ Icy Dock FatCage MB153SP-B: Hot-Swap 3x3.5 SATA Hard Drive Backplane Cage for 2X 5.25 Drive Bay by Lamar Marshall

Drive cooling test with all three drives installed and front air vents blocked: still cools well!

I just installed my new 3-in-2 Icy Dock FatCage and wanted to see how well it could cool drives. I installed 3 hard drives in it, a couple of more powerful Western Digital (WD) 7200 rpm hard drives. and a lower speed WD 5400 rpm drive. My computer case is the worst case for this FatCage. In my case, it's the Nanoxia Deep Silence 1 Rev B, which has a swinging door just in front of the 5 1/4 drive bays that completely blocks any air coming in and (presumably on purpose) any sound escaping that way. The ICY DOCK EZ trays have vents in their front flaps, which appear to be the intended path for air to enter and cool your drives before exiting through the 80mm exhaust fan. My Nanoxia almost completely blocks these vents. Before receiving my FatCage today I was concerned about the airflow, in this case the Nanoxia, about the discs I would put in the FatCage. I was concerned that I would have to drill some holes on the side, closer to the front of the FatCage's aluminum "box" surrounding the 3 drive bays. These holes are not necessary. Through the various openings and gaps between the front of the aluminum "box" and the back of the plastic front, through which air can enter from my (well-ventilated) Nanoxia case, above my 3 drives (they -really- have some space between them) and from the back of the "box" which is drawn in by an 80mm ICY DOCK exhaust fan. My hard drive stress test has been running for half an hour (although not too stressful - it reads but searches little) and so far I've managed to increase the temperature of the hard drives (seen with SMART) by around 5 or 6 degrees C. Cool! Unlike high-end CPUs and graphics cards, hard drives don't use as much power, so while some airflow helps (much better than stagnant air), it doesn't need as much airflow to keep the drives cool enough.
