Review on IoSafe Solo G3 3TB: Fireproof & Waterproof External Hard Drive in Pewter Gray - SK3TB by Lawrence Allison

Revainrating 4 out of 5

5 out of 5 devices I received worked great

I had 5 ioSafe devices. I would say it reached 80%. I was one of the first ioSafe customers and already had a USB 2.0 model. So I've been using them for a while. At the moment I have 2 USB 3.0 3TB drives connected to my main desktop system. One of the drives is working properly. The other loses the connection from time to time. I can't use it as a backup device because at least 50% of the time I get a fatal I/O error and the device goes offline in the middle of a full backup. A short-term process like an incremental backup works 95% of the time. This has been true since the day he arrived (maybe a year or more ago?). I've connected it to at least three other computers with USB 3.0 ports and observed the same thing. Reset USB connections. Shortly after receiving it and after thoroughly testing it myself, I sent it back to ioSafe for repair or replacement. I've tried different computers, different USB ports, and different cables. This device has always failed about 50% of the time during long surgeries and all of my other ioSafe devices have performed like a champ. They kept the device for a week or so and sent it back. As far as I can tell, nothing was done there at all. My experiments showed the same symptoms as before the return. This week I tried to do a full backup on Monday and it worked, so I tried again last night and it failed. I think I'm giving up. Unfortunately, I have been a huge supporter of ioSafe and have spoken to many at my place of work about this brand. I would say. I believe this was an anomaly and I will be purchasing another 3TB drive to replace it. I can use another device for short surgeries, but I have to admit. I'm nervous that I won't be able to recover when necessary. I know from many years of personal experience in the computer industry that intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose. But I'm disappointed because it seems so easy to make it fail on any number of machines, with any number of cables and all sorts of software running on them. I can't believe it passed a good stress test when it was sent back for repair. That being said, the very first ioSafe device I bought a few years ago still works great with my USB 2.0 ports. It is currently being used to backup my Linux computer. Also, I've been through a few rounds and the devices haven't been treated with kid gloves and the 4 that work continue to work. Knowing hard drives, ioSafe still outperforms every other brand of backup hard drive I've ever used. Although I wish I didn't have a lemon, I'll be sticking with them for a while. Update: 11/12/2015 - after returning an old device that had no shipping problems, partly my fault, partly UPS (I won't go into details) but NOT ioSafe's fault. ioSafe sent me a brand new device! The best customer service. This company is really cool. Every company can sometimes have problems with a product. But the one who gets it right, no matter what, is . that's the one you want to deal with. And their product was top notch. I now have several of these devices on different systems and they are amazing. I think my oldest device is a USB 2.0 drive from about 3 years ago or so. It still backs up data on my Linux machine.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Minor issues
