My yarn was black, shiny, smooth and quite satisfactory. Like others, I found the price high, but the price of yarn seems high everywhere. I buy it these days. The big disappointment was using it! Any of these methods might work for you if you are facing this problem. By removing the labels from both ends of the spool I could tell where the end was plugged in, but it was tiny. I tied it with tweezers to untie it but no. I tried widening the gap with a razor but that didn't help. (And then I had to sand down where I cut so the line doesn't get caught on it when I use it.) Spool to spool. If just one thread broke, the worst that can happen is that you sew for a while and then rethread the needle.) I was lucky and cut in the right place. But ANNOYING? YES, now I know why you pay even more for Guterman thread: its spools have a clearly visible groove on the ends for fastening the ends of the thread.
