I love it as a fun way to look at scientific methods and independent/dependent/control variables. Give 4th-12th (even college) students a real problem to solve just like a scientist would. Only one factor elicits a response, so students need to be reminded to test only one variable at a time. (e.g. an ice cube checks temperature and humidity at the same time). Reaction.) I do this every year on the second day of school with my 7th, 8th, or 9th graders. You didn't forget the independent variable all year when I said "Fortune Fish Lab"! They love the hook. (What personality defines the way a fish squirms?) Great for parties. Just have fun. People of all ages want to try it.
