Review on Sangean PR D15: The Ultimate FM Stereo Rechargeable Portable Companion by Jerry Gonzalez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent except the sound quality is not as good as the rest of the radio.

This radio is used 75% for AM talk radio and 25% for iPhone podcasts via the AUX jack (talk radio again). AM reception is excellent (hard to believe but VERY close to my much more expensive CCRadio 2E Plus which is known for its excellent AM section). And the AUX function works exactly as expected. All controls work perfectly. It has solid build quality and good plastic (although I wish they weren't shiny - just personal preference). The folding handle feels sturdy and easy to carry. When used with C batteries, the red light indicates when charging (flashing) and when charging is complete (solid), but the radio must be off to charge. The included power adapter works well for charging (great feature) and powering. The only problem I have is the sound. As some others have said, the sound is muffled - a bit muffled even at high frequencies at max 5 and low frequencies at max 5 in my opinion. Note that the bass/treble controls are not visible. To change the tone, simply press the volume knob once and twist to boost/cut the treble. Press twice and follow the same procedure for the bass. The tone changes are visible on the reading screen. Although the sound isn't as good as the performance of the radio, I immediately ordered another one (and batteries) as the radio is otherwise excellent, especially for the price. The 4 star rating is solely for this radio and does not reflect the second radio discussed below. Since writing the above review, I've received a second new PR1D15 (there are currently refurbished models as well), and the entire review is on the latter, with the exception of the sound quality. This unit sounds a little more muted, even with maximum treble boost at 5 and maximum bass cut at 5 (I compared them side by side). After much listening I find this unacceptable and will return it. My caution - if it doesn't sound right after a long listen with the tone controls, you'll probably never get used to it. But even with that experience, please consider that many Sangeans have served me very well over the years. Based on my past experience, I believe this audio issue is most likely an accident.
