I was about to buy a Pelican water carbon filter before I just happened to find this one. We had a really noticeable smell to the water and this does a great job of taking it out. And twice I waited to see if the smell would come back and it took about 5 months so now I replace it every 4 months and we've had no water smell. I found no way to quantify how long this filter should last. We also have iron and would always get the iron bacteria smell. And the iron filter part of this (although it's not what was bought) Also works really well. Before the filter I would have to treat the water heater with hydrogen peroxide about every 3 months. Now with the iron filter which is part of the package I'll treat the water heaters about once a year when there is just a slight indication of iron bacteria. There was a way to quantify how often this filter needed to be replaced. I looked at our iron ppm from a test and looked at our typical usage via the water softener and the spec from iSpring I computed that it should last about a year and it always has.If I have any complaint it's that when you swap the cartridge you can get a lot of water all over the floor but fortunately its in the basement.
