They are really needed if you are unsure about valve timing
Very necessary for my 3.6 GMC Acadia . Had to replace the VVT sprocket and they are recommended for the job. However, they allow the cam to move far enough to skip a tooth, but once the cams have expired they can be used as a reference point to reposition the cams. It is better to use a hex wrench when replacing VVT sprockets. The locking tools prevent the cams from moving after the chains are removed.
